I felt like I had found evidence of some secret society or ritual. These were always perplexing and many were fairly risque. Some were in costume as babies or bearded godlike figures, others were covered in grease and paint, still others depicted sailors dunking one another in shipboard pools.
Occasionally, I'd come across some strange photos of sailors involved in odd play. The maxim really is true, you never do know what you'll find. I've probably looked at hundreds of thousands of photos in my search, poring through boxes and boxes, album after album and infinite eBay pages. These collections yielded all sorts of serendipitous discoveries including the affectionate men genre.
When I moved to San Francisco I started collecting vintage photos of the 1906 earthquake and then dug even further back in time to photos of late nineteenth century San Francisco.Īs time went on, I would stumble upon boxes of old photos and buy them just to see what I could find when I went home.
